Review: Tremont 647

After singing for the Lord at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in the South End, Jen and I decided to try to get some brunch somewhere we could eat outside and enjoy the sunshine. We had no idea that we would find THE place for brunch just a short walk away at Tremont 647.

This place was incredible! There is no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best places in all of Boston for brunch. If there were a doubt, it would be quickly assuged by the scores of local reviewers that have rated it the best in Boston and the recognition chef Andy Husbands has received from the National Pork Board (the ‘Other White Meat’ people).

Sunday is Pajama Brunch day for Tremont 647 and even with perfect weather and a great reputation, we only had to wait 20 minutes for a seat outside. The sunny tables offer the perfect vantage point from which to people and dog watch on Tremont, the latter of which can be very exciting if you are suffering from canine separation anxiety like Jen and I.

The menu options were alluring and sported some very interesting variations on familiar breakfast items as well as some daring experiments in brunch cuisine. I ordered the French toast, which was actually French toasted croissants which came doused in maple syrup with a rhubarb confit on top. It came out looking beautiful and tasting amazing, with a side of country sausage that satisfied my most instinctual cravings for sausage. Just to make things clear, using croissants to make French toast is the greatest idea ever. Ever.

Jen got a wicked scramble with the thickest bacon either of us had ever seen. Jen said that she will never be able to look at regular bacon again (no wonder that the pork board is all over their chef).

We were both very impressed with the service and though it was disappointing to hear that they are not currently offering the breakfast pizza, we were very intrigued by the explanation that they will offer it again when they can get it to come out like it used to. Apparently, there is much more art than science involved in the making of breakfast pizzas.

All in all, this place is fantastic.  We will definitely go back and I recommend it to anyone in search of a great brunch experience at a reasonable price. If you go, you may even be as lucky as we were and hear Lionel Richie singing “Easy” right as you savor your last bites on a beautiful Sunday morning.
